Super Smash Buns
LA's tastiest tongue twisting burgers
For Chef Yaseen, it all started in the early 2000s, when he was in his mid-teens.
Times were tough for his family—Yaseen’s parents had been working multiple minimum wage jobs to provide for them through the years. But, as fate would have it, Yaseen’s mom, Hashmat Begum was encouraged to take up small catering gigs from family and friends.
She worked hard to adapt her amazing home recipes for a wider audience and it wasn’t long before her cooking was in demand at weddings, birthdays and other events in the Pakistani community. Yaseen got an early education in the hard work and dedication required to succeed in the business. He recalls “coming home from school seeing horrifying pots and pans, vegetables to chop and blanch, and what have you to carry out the works.
That was our plan.”
In high school, Yaseen focused on choosing a career path. He saw a gap between what he saw was “I, the low popularity of Pakistani food, in Southern California”. Believing that the region has been missing out on the cuisine’s unique flavors, Yaseen realized that he was in the best position to incorporate his mother’s traditional Pakistani cooking with a creative American approach.
With his vision in mind, Yaseen began his journey by taking part in whatever courses available at his local high school. He did everything he could do to further his knowledge of the culinary arts, including joining Culinary ROP after school and then later volunteering at a local five star Italian restaurant called Spaggi’s, shadowing executive Chef Henry Gonzales. He quickly grew to understand the “relaxing chaos” that gets created in a hospitality industry, and he accepted it.
Next, with a full private scholarship in hand, Yaseen began formal studies at the best Culinary Institute in the world, Le Cordon Bleu, in Pasadena, California. In his words, the school “became the Mecca for my vision in culinary, we studied to become artists and future entrepreneurs. Pushing our palates, experimenting and sharing our cultures and cooking techniques me and my respected colleagues were extremely fond of learning new methods from each other and still are.”
It was at le Cordon Bleu when the concept of joining the Los Angele’s food truck scene became of interest. Yaseen thought of a way to introduce his Pakistani cuisine, via the most popular So-Cal foods which are Burgers, Sliders and Tacos. Targeting to keep the menu simple, Exciting and easy to order at the same time! Now after two years of graduating from Le Cordon Bleu, with the help of a respected investor, and a name that stands for HIGH ENERGY, CREATIVITY and ACTION, Super Smash Buns was Initiated to Serve.
